Perhaps the most sophisticated use of mathematics in public speech was Nixon's announcement that: "The rate of increase in the inflation rate has gone down." I.e., the -third- derivative in the price of money is negative. Graphically, the -second- derivative in the value of inflation is negative, i.e., the graph is concave down. I.e., inflation is increasing at a decreasing rate. (inflation is (negative) the derivative/secant of the price of money) ..... note how here it's used to obfuscate: inflation is still high, and getting worse, just not as quickly as before.
