big problem is:
lecture on something conceptual
...but then the homework is just computations
(sometimes the test is like the homework, and never learn anything,
other times the test is conceptual & unfair/hurts students)
helps if
*understanding the concept makes exercises easier*
(if you can *see* the solution)
...and if "the way you see" is actually spelled out to students
[you actually point out the patterns]
Best is:
give a *new example* where you need to apply the concept
some resolutions:
- understand in class,
just compute on homework
